The wide, soft brim provides excellent protection from the sun, while the flexible construction allows it to be easily packed into a backpack or bag. The Gonzo spirit emerged from the American counterculture of the 1970s and the style of journalism made famous by Hunter S. Thompson. Instead of detached observation, it embraced total immersion, spontaneity, and genuine experience. Over time, Gonzo evolved beyond literature to become a symbol of freedom and independence.
