There and Back: An Extraordinary Journey to Japan

On August 27, 1926, Lieutenant Pilot Bolesław Orliński and Sergeant Mechanic Leonard Kubiak took off from Warsaw aboard a Breguet XIX A2. Ahead of them lay more than ten thousand kilometers each way, through Moscow, Siberia, Manchuria, and Korea. They flew a standard production biplane with open cockpits, without radio or modern navigation equipment. Their main tools were a map, a compass, and their own experience.

On September 5, they reached Tokyo. The Poles were welcomed as heroes. Orliński was awarded the Order of the Rising Sun, Sixth Class, while both airmen received Gold Medals from the Imperial Aviation Society.

On the return journey, their aircraft suffered a serious failure. A broken wing and damaged propeller did not bring the expedition to an end. They repaired the aircraft with whatever materials they had at hand and continued flying. On September 25, they returned to Poland, having covered approximately 22,600 kilometers.

One hundred years later, this very story became the starting point for our anniversary cap.

A Passion for Flying

For this photoshoot, we weren’t looking for a conventional model. Since we are telling the story of men for whom an aircraft was a tool of work, a passion, and a way of pushing beyond new boundaries, we wanted someone in front of the camera who truly knows this world.

That is why the cap is worn by Maciej Pospieszyński, a multiple world champion and one of Poland’s most accomplished aerobatic pilots, active in both powered and glider aerobatics. A man who knows flying not from stories, but from his own experience at the controls.

Timeless Classic

The Shelby is a classic eight-panel newsboy cap with a full, rounded silhouette. Eight individually cut sections of fabric meet at the center beneath the characteristic top button, giving the cap its volume and relaxed shape. The crown falls softly over the short, structured visor, creating the iconic line of this style.

It is one of those designs that easily finds its place in different styles. In the right fabric, it can complement a suit or a more formal outfit, but it looks just as good with a jacket, sweater, or simple T-shirt. More than a century of history means the Shelby no longer has to choose between elegance and everyday wear.

A Small Symbol of a Great Journey

We added a small metal pin in the shape of a red triangle to the anniversary cap. At its center, we placed the silhouette of an aircraft and the words “There and Back.” We designed it to resemble a symbol that could just as easily have appeared on the side of an aircraft or on a suitcase returning from a faraway journey.

In the past, luggage was a little like a passport. Stickers from hotels, airlines, and cities visited remained on trunks as traces of successive journeys. Over time, the object itself began to tell the story of the places it had reached together with its owner.

Abraham Moon & Sons

The fabric for this cap was woven by Abraham Moon & Sons, one of Britain’s most highly regarded mills. The company has operated continuously since 1837 in Guiseley, near Leeds, on the edge of the Yorkshire Dales, and for more than 180 years has remained faithful to the same textile tradition.

What sets the mill apart is its complete control over the production process. Every stage, from raw wool through dyeing, blending, carding, spinning, warping, weaving, and finishing, takes place at a single mill. Today, it is one of the few mills in the United Kingdom that still operates this way.

Not all wool has to be thick, heavy, and made for the depths of winter. For this model, we chose something entirely different. 100% wool from the apparel collection, created primarily with classic tailoring in mind.

In 1926, Anna Sterkowska opened her workshop in Warsaw. She could not have known that four generations later, her great-grandchildren would be making caps and hats for people all over the world.

But she was certain of one thing. A great cap begins with exceptional materials and craftsmanship.

For one hundred years, that philosophy has remained unchanged. Every cap that leaves our workshop is the result of knowledge and experience passed down from generation to generation.
