A Fight in the Rain

On 23 September 1926, at Sesquicentennial Stadium in Philadelphia, Gene Tunney beat Jack Dempsey by unanimous decision after ten rounds and took the world heavyweight title from him. It was a sensation - Dempsey, the "Manassa Mauler," was the idol of the era, and he was beaten by Tunney, "The Fighting Marine," a scholar-boxer who read Shakespeare between bouts. The fight took place in sheets of pouring rain. The assembled crowd of 120,000 spectators, soaked to the skin, followed the bout with bated breath all the way to the final, tenth round.

Japanese Denim

Kuroki is one of those names spoken with respect in the world of denim. The company operates in Okayama, or more precisely in Kojima, a district of Kurashiki regarded as the Japanese heart of selvedge denim. It's there, on old shuttle looms, that narrow, densely woven fabrics are made - highly durable and with a distinctive, slightly uneven texture.

Kuroki's roots reach back roughly a hundred years. From the 1950s the company produced cotton fabrics for clothing and industrial uses, and by the 1970s it had focused exclusively on denim. Importantly, Kuroki is one of the few manufacturers that combine dyeing, weaving and finishing the fabric in one place. One process. One chain. Full control over the cloth.

Treated denim for comfort

Washed and prepared to keep pace in any conditions. The kind of denim that, once treated, needs no further breaking in. From the very first wear it's soft, sits well on the head and puts up no resistance. The texture stays pronounced, the weave visible, but to the touch the material is pleasant and tamed - it has the character of denim without its stiffness.

The pre-wash has also stabilised the colour. The material doesn't bleed, so it won't stain a light shirt or your skin on a hot day.

It's a detail that nods to the history that inspired us. The cap is comfortable, but the material itself belongs, in the world of denim, to the heavyweight class when it comes to durability.
