The American M-16 automatic rifle was developed by Eugene Stoner. It was the American designers’ response to the Soviet AK-47. Mass production of the M-16 began in 1960, commissioned by the US Air Force.

It then became standard issue equipment for US ground troops fighting in Vietnam. Initially purchased on a temporary and one-off basis, the M-16 went on to become an iconic piece of US military equipment. The rifle is currently produced by manufacturers in the US, Canada and China.
